The Program

Dear Parents and Students,
I want to thank you personally for your interest in the Tim Sheredy Golf Institute (TSGI). TSGI will provide your child with all the tools for golfing success. At TSGI we focus on maximizing a student's potential. With over 14 years of experience in teaching the best junior golfers in the world I have come up with an individualized -tailored program that will help each student maximize their golfing potential.
TSGI will focus on all areas of the game of golf: full-swing, short game, course management, SHARP and SMART GOLF, mental skills, club fitting, physical fitness/nutrition, tournament preparation and college placement.
TSGI's full time program will be a five day a week program that is totally tailored to each individual golfer. Each golfer will be taught as an individual, there is no method teaching at TSGI. Each golfer will be given an individual practice schedule for each week and these schedules will be created to maximize each player's strengths and improve their weaknesses. I will personally create each practice schedule. All schedules will be e-mailed to the student and parent every Sunday night before Monday's practice.
TSGI has teamed up with many experts in the field of golf to help each student develop and maximize their potential. Dr. Deborah Graham and John Stabler will be handling the mental skills area, Mike Via (From Body Balance for Golf and a licensed physical therapist) and Gold's gym will be doing physical fitness. Club fitting will be handled by Eddie Bass and Larry Jones. Geoff Mangum will be a putting guest instructor and John Brooks of Red Numbers Golf and Brendan Ryan of College Golf Connect will offer advice for college placement. I will be coaching the students in SHARP and SHARP GOLF.
FULL-SWING
Concerning the full-swing all students will be taught as individuals at TSGI. At TSGI the main reason we change a golf swing is so that the student can control their golf balls distance, direction, trajectory and spin. TSGI will help the student develop a swing that is simple and uncomplicated and can hold up under tournament pressure.
Through the use of V-1 computer swing technology the student will have their swing analyzed and stored in the computer so that the student will be able to see the changes and progress throughout the school year. DVD's will also be made for the students so that they can have a personal library of their swings. All DVD's will include audio instructions as well.
The first two weeks of the golf program at TSGI will be used for skill testing. A full-swing skill test will be given to each student and the results will be sent to each parent and also stored for comparison for later skill testing evaluations. Each student will be skill tested three times during the golf program. Once at the beginning of the program, the second will be done before Christmas break and the final skill test will be administered at the end of May.
Each student will be given a Swing Blueprint so that they have a full grasp over what changes they are making and why we are making the changes. The first step in TSGI swing analysis is describing to the student why their old swing is making the golf ball behave as it does. The second step is showing and telling them what they must do correctly. The third step involves using innovative drills, training aids and mirrors so that the student can feel the changes that are being made. The final step in the process is to get the student to trust the change on the golf course. All Swing Blueprints will be given to the parents as well.
All students will be taught the following full-swing fundamentals throughout the school year: grip drill, posture drill, aiming and proper alignment procedures, ball placement, pivot drill, proper swing plane and swing path, shot shaping (fade, draw, high and low) and also a sound pre shot full-swing routine. It is extremely important at TSGI that their students understand golf's basic fundamental rules and principles for the full-swing.
SHORT GAME
The short game is the area where all students can and will spend a large majority of practice time. I have yet to come across a great player who does not have a great short game. These great short game players become great because of hard work and understanding of proper short game fundamentals.
At TSGI we will go over all short game fundamentals and all short game shots: putting, chipping, bunker play, pitch shots, distance wedges will all be covered. Also, we will cover specialized short game shots such as: buried lies, uneven slopes, hard pan and tight lies, flop shots, bump and runs, thick rough shots to a tight pin and many more specialized shots.
Each student will get a handout of how to execute each short game shot which has a complete description of the fundamentals on how to execute the shot properly. TSGI students will be giving a personalized-individualized short game blueprint as well. The short game blueprint will go over their current faults and what they need to do to correct their faults. Drills and touch and feel exercises will then be given so that the student can enhance their feel and improve in a quicker fashion.
A large percentage of short game practice will take place out on the golf course so that TSGI students can work on real golf course situations and learn to trust their mechanics. This is an extremely important step in becoming a great short game player and it is one advantage that TSGI students have over any other golf academy.
Throughout the last 14 years teaching top level junior players I have come up with hundreds of drills and exercises in the short game area that will make the students more productive. These drills and exercises will be challenging and yet fun at the same time. As the school year goes by each student will have their set drills which helps them individually improve their game.
Each TSGI student will be skill tested in the short game area three times during the school year and the results will be e-mailed to both student and parents. Also each student will be put on the SAM PUTT LAB putting analyzer. The SAM PUTT LAB is an innovative putting tool which gives accurate information on items such a putter path, impact point and face angle at impact.
I cannot over emphasize how important a good short game is for good golf. That is why at TSGI we will spend a large majority of time practicing and working on developing a great short game.
COURSE MANAGEMENT
At TSGI we place a great importance on training and instructing our students on the proper tools for developing a great course management mind set. All students at TSGI will be trained in SMART GOLF.
SMART GOLF is all about using your mind efficiently and effectively to maximize a players scoring potential. SMART GOLF focuses on the following topics: creating a strategy for each shot, hole and round of golf, managing ones game and emotions, proper playing attitude, taking responsibility for the player's actions and decisions and trusting of their decisions. Each one of these topics will be covered in depth with the students.
Other SMART GOLF topics that will be covered are: creating a Strength and Areas of Improvement Profile, which helps a player analyze and assess their golf game so as to help them create a game plan for improvement. Each month we will fill out a Strength and AOI profile.
Keeping statistics is vitally important in SMART GOLF so that the player will be able to see where their golf game is strong and where it needs improvement. We will keep the following statistics: fairways( if fairway is missed it will be notes as well, ex- hook left-HL), greens(if you missed will be noted), putts, up and downs, sand saves, penalty shots, score on par 3's, 4's, par 5's and every 6 holes. Statistics sheets will be given to each player so as to monitor their progress throughout the year.
Preparation for a golf shot involves five areas which will be covered in course management training. They are: 1. Surveying each shot. 2. Plan/Visualization. 3. Rehearsal Swing. 4. Execution. 5. Acceptance of shot. These five steps will be covered everyday that the students are on the golf course and the students will have a complete understanding of how to prepare correctly for a golf shot.
Colored Course Conditions(green light, red light and yellow light pins), Level of Playing(A, B, and C game) quality practice, creating a practice guide, how to properly execute a practice round, fundamentals of hitting off of different lies, slopes, wind conditions and weather elements will also be taught. All the information given to the students about course management will be in the SHARP and SMART book as well as in various handouts.
Once a week I will meet with the students inside to go over a course management topic. We will discuss the topic and then during the remainder of the week we will practice putting the information to use on the golf course. Either I or my assistant will always be on the golf course with the students at all times helping them implement their new information.
I also will have the students participate in games and exercises on the golf course that challenge their mind and make them focus intently on their course management goals.
MENTAL GAME
TSGI is very fortunate to be working with Dr. Deborah Graham and Jon Stabler with the mental side of the game. Dr. Graham and Jon Stabler have worked with over 100 PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour players. To have their expertise and guidance for the mental side of the game is a great benefit to all TSGI students.
Dr. Graham focuses on the 8 traits of champion golfers. The 8 traits are: focus, abstract thinking, emotional stability, dominance, touch mindedness, confidence, self-sufficiency and optimum arousal. These 8 champions' traits were developed over years of analyzing and testing the best golfers in the world (PGA, LPGA and Champions tour players).
All TSGI students will tested with Dr. Graham's golfpsych test which will cover all 8 champion traits. The test will reveal where the students are strong mentally and where they need improvement. The test results will be sent back to the student in a 50 page report that documents all 8 traits and how they can improve upon those 8 traits. From there the student and either Dr. Graham or Jon Stabler will discuss a program for mental improvement. I will work hand and hand with Dr. Graham and Jon Stabler to help the students achieve peak mental performance.
Every week all TSGI students will meet and discuss a SMART GOLF topic that will help them with their mental game. SMART GOLF topics that will be discussed are: goal setting, how to mentally prepare for a tournament, trust, having fun, desire, dedication, positive attitude and positive self talk and patience and perseverance.
All TSGI students will be given SHARP and SMART GOLF; "A JUNIORS GUIDE to GOLFING SUCCESS" this book will cover all the mental topics and also provide goal setting sheets for each month. Also included in working with Dr. Graham and Jon Stabler is their valuable website which provides great tools for goal setting, tournament goals, practice goals and mental evaluations for the state of each student's game. All TSGI students will be given their own private code to use the golfpsych website (www.golfpsych.com) to their own use.
The mental game is a very important aspect of the improvement of all TSGI students and with the help of Dr. Graham and Jon Stabler TSGI students will have all the tools for a great mental game!
PYHSICAL FITNESS/NUTRITION
All students of TSGI will be involved in a physical fitness program that will benefit their golf game and also their overall health as well. TSGI has partnered with Gold's gym to provide a gym membership for all of its students. Also contributing to TSGI's physical fitness program is certified golf therapist Mike Via.
Gold gym is conviently located 10 minutes away from Laurel Oak C.C. on Bee Ridge Road. TSGI works closely with Gold's gym certified trainer Kat Cosentino to help their students achieve peak physical condition.
Mike Via also contributes to the physical aspect of TSGI's physical fitness program. Mike is a certified Titleist Performance Institute trainer with an emphasis on junior golfers. All TSGI students will be taken through a 2 hour golf fitness evaluation by Mike that will show where the students are physically strong and where they need improvement. Mike will then develop a program that will address the weaker link issues of the body.
Twice a week all TSGI students will be running three miles with Director Tim Sheredy to help them with the cardio side of the fitness program. Morning golfers will run at 7:30 every Tuesday and Thursday and afternoon golfers will run at 5:00 every Tuesday and Thursday as well.
Nutrition is an extremely important aspect of the TSGI program. All students will be instructed on the proper foods to eat and the proper fluids to drink. What to eat pre round, during the round and post round of tournaments will also be discussed and taught to TSGI students. As well as ideas of what to eat and not eat during normal non golfing days.
Dr. Graham and Jon Stabler also have great ideas and literature on their website that addresses the nutritional aspect of the game and they discuss this information with their students as well during their mental sessions.
CLUBFITTING
Club fitting is an integral part of the TSGI program. If a student's golf clubs fit them properly then it's going to be much easier for them to swing more efficiently and thus score better.
All TSGI students' golf clubs will be checked and analyzed and they will then go through a club fitting session at the beginning of the golf program. Specifications such as grip size, club length, lie angle; shaft flex will all be checked. A computer launch monitor will provide ball speed, launch angle, spin rate and smash factor for each students swing.
Gap fitting is also included in the TSGI program. Gap fitting is a system where a launch monitor records the distances that each club hits the golf ball. All students will hit every golf club in their bag and get an accurate number of how many yards there ball has carried. This will be a valuable tool for each student so that they know how far they carry each one of their golf clubs.
TSGI students will also get a ball-fitting recommendation. Using Flight Scope computer technology, students will receive information that provides them with the proper golf ball that fits their golf game. Flight Scope technology can determine which golf ball is best for the student's driver, middle irons and wedges. The student then can choose the proper ball that fits their golf game.
COLLEGE PLACEMENT
One of the main goals of TSGI is to help its students receive a college golf scholarship so that they can get an education and further their golfing career. Director of Instruction Tim Sheredy has helped over 75 students receive college scholarships.
Brendan Ryan of College Golf Connect and John Brooks of Red Numbers Golf also assist TSGI students with all their college placement criteria.
